Even is the mattress's job. Level is where you park.

A mattress shaped for your Tesla can make the floor inside the car even. Whether you sleep level depends on the ground under the car, so every camper still has to deal with the outside.

The folded seats are the steep slope, and a shaped mattress is built to cancel it. The ground is a gentler slope, and no mattress can.

Three slopes stack up

  1. The folded seats. Model Y seatbacks stop short of flat: one 2023 owner measured 7-10°, and TESMAT puts it at about 8° before 2025 and 13° on Juniper. No one has published a Model 3 figure.
  2. The car itself. The same owner found the cargo floor sloping about 1.5° toward the rear with the car on level ground.
  3. The ground. Paved car parks are built with a 1-5% slope so water drains, with about 2% as the practical target. Road shoulders tilt sideways by 2-8%.

What level means

Level means horizontal relative to gravity. Model Y and Model 3 ride on coil springs with no ride-height setting, and Camp Mode keeps the climate and power on but levels nothing. The car sits at whatever angle the ground gives it, and the bed goes with it.

About "self-leveling"

Several brands describe the folded-seat fix in level language. Every one of them is talking about the seats inside the car, not the parking spot.

BrandWordingWhat it actually addresses
Havnby"Self-Leveling Foam Core" at launch; the current FlatCore page sells it as a leveling solutionA fixed taper that offsets the seat slope
NovaPads"perfectly level Tesla bed"Its own FAQ says about 6-7° of slope remains
TESMAT"a flat, 0-degree sleeping surface"A contoured profile against the seat incline
Snuuzu"one genuinely flat surface"Its FAQ adds that it can't level a car parked on a slope

How to deal with the outside

  1. Check where you'll actually sleep. Lay a phone level on the made-up mattress, not on the ground. The iPhone's Measure app has one, and that single reading covers the seats, the car and the ground at once.
  2. Fix sideways tilt first, because you roll toward the low side. Road shoulders are built to tilt sideways, so pick a parking bay over a shoulder where you can.
  3. Aim for level or slightly head-up. The standard camping advice is to sleep head uphill.
  4. Turn the car before reaching for blocks. Swapping which end points uphill changes the head-to-foot angle by twice the slope.
  5. Use leveling blocks when the spot is fixed. Raising one axle by 4 in (10 cm) on a camper leveler corrects about 3.5%, or 2°, front to back on a Model 3 or Y.
  6. Know your mattress. Snuuzu says its head end sits slightly higher by design, so with that mattress point the nose a little downhill or put a block under the rear wheels.

The short version

In a Model Y, the folded seats sit 7 to 13 degrees off flat, with a step down to the trunk floor. A mattress shaped for the car can fill those dips and angles and turn them into one even surface. What no mattress can do is level the car itself: a typical car park slopes about 2%, enough to tilt any bed by about 4 cm from head to foot. So check with a phone level on the mattress, then turn the car or put a block under the wheels until it reads level.

Which mattresses handle the seat slope best is in the full ranking, and the methodology shows how Fit & stability is scored.
